Customs Compliance Specialist
Overview
Our client in Waterloo Region is looking for an experienced Customs Compliance Specialist with certifications in International Trade Practices (CIFFA/FITT) and working towards a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation to join them in a permanent full-time role!
As the Customs Compliance Specialist you will oversee the day-to-day business of importing and exporting goods, customs related activities for the company and provide compliance and regulatory support to the organization.

Education and Skills Requirements:
- Must have a Certificate or Diploma in International Trade Practices (CIFFA / FITT),
- Must have or working towards Certified Custom Specialist (CCS) Designation
- More than one (1) year of experience in Canadian Customs regulations
- More than one (1) year of experience in an Import/Export and Transportation related capacity
- Background in manufacturing is an asset
- Strong understanding of trade regulations, including HTS classification, Incoterms and Free Trade Agreements
- Experience working with customs brokers and government agencies; such as CBSA, CTPAT, CBP
- Working knowledge of duty drawbacks, amendments, rulings and customs audits
- Excellent communication and attention to detail
- Use critical thinking, sound financial acumen, business sense to drive decisions
- Collect and analyze data from appropriate sources and prepare/present meaningful and concise communications
- Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, in a rapidly changing environment
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide various international customs paperwork for outbound shipments and upload the export declaration to Customs Export Reporting System (CERS)
- Coordinate with internal departments as well as US & Canadian customs brokers, freight forwarders and various carriers to arrange worldwide shipments and maintain an efficient customs release
- Respond to US & Canadian brokers inquiries, provide customs paperwork and USMCA (CUSMA), DOT forms – H7, EPA, Bearing checklists, ADD/CVD quarterly forms
- Communicating with freight forwarders, both local and overseas, to arrange Full Container Load (FCL), Less than Container Load (LCL), and air shipments
- To effectively manage the shipment process from departure to delivery at the door, while keeping vendors informed via email and providing the necessary paperwork
- Request USMCA/CUSMA from vendors.
- Audit truck carriers, customs brokers, and freight forwarder invoices for accuracy and any discrepancies
- Staying current with customs and tariff rulings, as well as regulatory matters
